Tesla Faces Probe and Lawsuit After Model 3 Kills Woman in Texas
Tesla Inc. faces a lawsuit and expanded federal scrutiny after a Model 3 sedan crashed into a Texas home this month, killing a 76-year-old woman. The US National Transportation Safety Board opened a formal investigation on Tuesday, adding to an existing probe by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration into the vehicle’s Autopilot driver-assistance system.
The suit was filed by the family of the woman who was killed when the electric vehicle slammed into the property near Houston at roughly 73 mph on Friday evening. Tesla later confirmed that the driver manually overrode the Autopilot system by pressing the accelerator pedal. Federal investigators are now evaluating the driver-assistance software’s performance and the circumstances of the collision to determine whether a safety recall is warranted.
