Qualcomm Unveils Dragonfly AI Data Center Chips and Acquires Modular
Qualcomm unveiled its Dragonfly data center AI platform at a June 24 investor day, introducing the C1000 CPU and AI300 inference accelerators designed for agentic AI workloads. The chipmaker also announced it acquired Modular, an AI software company, to bolster its software stack, and highlighted Meta as a launch customer for its data center CPUs, which are slated for production in 2028. Additionally, Qualcomm disclosed plans to bring parts of its High Bandwidth Compute memory-on-logic architecture to smartphones and PCs by 2027 to improve local AI processing.
The announcements initially propelled Qualcomm shares more than 13% higher after market close, prompting Morgan Stanley to raise its price target to $231 and Susquehanna to $190. However, those gains quickly evaporated as traders scrutinized the company's aggressive expansion beyond its smartphone processor business. Qualcomm raised its non-handset revenue forecast to $40 billion by fiscal 2029, aiming to capture a larger slice of the AI silicon market. Analysts, however, noted that skepticism persisted regarding whether Qualcomm can execute its roadmap and capture meaningful share against established incumbents like Nvidia and Broadcom.
