US Lifts Export Restrictions on Anthropic's Claude Mythos 5 AI Model

The US Commerce Department lifted export restrictions on Anthropic’s Claude Mythos 5 AI model, authorizing the AI lab to distribute it to more than 100 approved domestic institutions. Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick finalized the authorization as part of an agreement to address security concerns raised by the Trump administration, according to people familiar with the matter.

The policy shift reverses a freeze that took effect when Anthropic unexpectedly barred access to its frontier models, including Mythos 5 and Fable 5, after determining it could not reliably prevent foreign nationals from using the software under US export laws. While the Commerce Department secured partial relief for Mythos 5, ongoing negotiations aim to restore access to Fable 5 and establish formal export protocols, sources say.

This Fable 5 update sounds almost too good to be true: The latest Claude Code update does not only include some interesting hints about Fable 5’s return. It also suggests that the model may be permanently added to the subscription plan.

@kimmonismus

We are so back. Fable 5 is so back.

SITUATION EXPLAINED: Fable 5 might be coming back. • Leaked strings in Claude Code V2.1.190: "You've used your Fable 5 usage for this week" added • "Purchased separately from your plan" removed, suggesting it's going back into subscription

The Fable shutdown shows how quickly model access can become a business continuity risk. Many teams assumed the frontier AI supply chain was resilient. It’s now clear that access to critical AI infrastructure can change overnight. https:/

To be clear: I personally *cannot* select it. Apparently, it is available to some in that they can select it in the model selector. And that also explains why it appears on Amazon Bedrock. But if you were able to select it for a long time,

@kimmonismus

Some users can (re)select Fable 5 in the Claude Code model selector, while others say they were able to select it despite Fable 5 being taken down. I deleted the post about it because I was too unsure and didn't want to spread false inform

@kimmonismus

I hope this is true.

@wesroth

Claude Code v2.1.190 appears to contain new interface strings preparing for the return of Claude Fable 5.

@kimmonismus

Fable 5 is back - and now there’s video proof. Not just showing up in the model selector. People are actually using the model again. We are so back.

@wesroth

Claude Fable 5 appears to have returned to Amazon Bedrock.

@sammcallister

@kimmonismus We are currently serving exactly 0 traffic to Fable 5. This could be a UI bug though, will track it down.

@kimmonismus

Correction: Anthropic states that the apparent access to Fable 5 is likely attributable to a UI bug.

@kimmonismus

Corrected the post with the Anthropic message:

@wesroth

Claude Fable 5 appears to be returning to Claude users through a slow rollout.

@theamolavasare

Seeing chatter about Fable 5 being accessible - can say categorically this is false, we are not serving any Fable / Mythos traffic Looking into possibility of UI bug on front-end (e.g. based on historical context), but also very real chanc

@theamolavasare

@chetaslua @chetaslua unfortunately this is not true, and we are not currently serving ANY fable / mythos traffic
