Xbox Raises Prices Following Apple's Move as Memory Chip Costs Climb
Microsoft's Xbox division has raised the prices of its gaming hardware, joining Apple in hiking prices for consumer devices due to rapidly rising costs for memory and storage chips. The price adjustments for Xbox follow a company-wide shift announced earlier Wednesday by Apple, which increased prices by up to $300 on select Mac and iPad models. Both hardware makers cited an 'extraordinary surge' in demand driven by the construction of AI data centers, which has created a severe shortage in the DRAM and NAND semiconductor markets.
Apple Chief Executive Tim Cook stated that the device price increases were 'unavoidable,' noting the technology company had 'never seen' component costs rise so quickly. Microsoft's decision to pass the semiconductor supply squeeze onto console buyers underscores how inflation is moving upstream from enterprise infrastructure into consumer electronics and gaming. The broader tightening of memory supply has already prompted semiconductor suppliers to highlight capacity constraints, leaving device manufacturers with limited options but passing costs directly to customers.
