DeepSeek Raises $7.4 Billion and Plans to Double Workforce After Anthropic AI Preview
DeepSeek, a Chinese artificial-intelligence lab, has raised $7.4 billion in a new funding round, according to a June 26 report from The Information. The capital raise marks a major shift for the three-year-old company, which previously operated on CEO Liang Wenfeng’s personal wealth. Following the announcement, DeepSeek published a recruitment post on WeChat stating it plans to at least double its headcount across all departments, including AI systems, infrastructure, product development, and research.
The financing push follows Anthropic’s April preview of Mythos, a frontier AI model that reportedly convinced Liang the company needed a significantly larger financial backing to compete in the global AI race. DeepSeek currently employs around 300 people and aims to rapidly scale its operations to match the capabilities of rivals such as Anthropic and OpenAI. The fresh capital will likely cover both aggressive hiring and the substantial compute costs required for training advanced large language models.
