Putin acknowledges fuel shortages as Russia considers diesel export ban
Russian President Vladimir Putin publicly acknowledged a worsening fuel shortage, confirming that gasoline queues persist at filling stations across the country and that strategic reserves are being drawn down. During a government meeting Tuesday, Putin stated that gasoline stockpiles remain at 1.7 million tons, a 4% decline from last year, and added that Moscow is considering a complete ban on diesel exports to stabilize domestic supplies.
The admission marks a shift after weeks of rationing and temporary export restrictions on gasoline and kerosene. Deputy Prime Minister Aleksandr Novak warned of potential gasoline imports to ease the crisis, which erupted in May after Ukrainian strikes on key oil refineries crippled domestic refining capacity and scrambled logistics networks. In several regions, authorities have declared states of alert and imposed strict limits of 50 liters per vehicle, with Omsk refinery now reportedly the only strategic plant operating at full capacity.
