Brazil Probes Hack of Emergency Alert System That Sent False Warning to Millions
Brazil's federal police are investigating an intrusion into the country's emergency alert system after an unauthorized extreme alert containing the word "misantropia," Portuguese for misanthropy, was sent around 1:30 a.m. on June 20 to phones in São Paulo, Rio de Janeiro, Paraná, the Federal District and other areas, reaching millions of Brazilians. The warning platform was taken offline as a precaution.
Officials described the episode as a probable cyberattack. Earlier reporting indicated the false notice was distributed nationwide through Brazil's public emergency warning network.
