Japan Exports Rise 17% in May, Chip Imports Push Trade Balance Back to Deficit
Japan’s exports rose 17% in May from a year earlier, the fastest pace since November 2022, as demand for cars and semiconductors strengthened. Even so, the trade balance swung to a deficit for the first time in four months as imports of chips and other electronic components surged.
Semiconductor exports climbed 61.2% and auto exports rose 16.4%, with overall export growth beating forecasts and accelerating from 14.8% in April. Export volumes rose just 0.5%, suggesting prices and yen weakness accounted for much of the increase in export values.
