France Says Iran UN Sanctions Relief Requires Its Approval, Raising Hurdle for 60-Day US-Iran Deal
France’s foreign minister, Jean-Noël Barrot, said any lifting of United Nations sanctions on Iran would require France’s approval, creating a new obstacle for the US-Iran memorandum of understanding that took effect on Wednesday. The 14-point accord opens a 60-day window for a final agreement and says the US would pursue the termination of sanctions on Iran, including UN and IAEA measures.
The French position matters because the memorandum also says any final deal would be endorsed through a binding UN Security Council resolution. While the accord is already in effect and Washington and Tehran have begun implementing shipping and Iranian oil-sale provisions, Barrot’s comment shows broader sanctions relief remains unresolved.
