Brent Falls Below $80 for First Time Since March as US-Iran Deal Spurs Supply Bets
Brent crude fell below $80 a barrel for the first time since early March, extending a selloff that began after the US-Iran framework deal to reopen the Strait of Hormuz. The move deepened Monday’s nearly 5% slide as traders bet Gulf crude exports will resume, with Brent’s six-month calendar spread narrowing to a little over $4 a barrel from more than $37 on March 31.
Physical flows remain far from normal. Shippers in Asia and Europe said confidence to resume transit could take weeks to rebuild and navigation will restart only once safety is assured, even as two Iran-linked tankers were seen sailing eastward through the strait ahead of Friday’s planned signing in Switzerland. Qatar expects to restore about 50% of LNG output a month after safe passage returns and roughly 80% within two months, while President Donald Trump said the US could soon let Russian oil waivers lapse because “the oil is now flowing.”
