Russia Allows Lower-Spec Gasoline and Diesel as Shortages Hit 21 Regions
Fuel shortages in Russia have spread to 21 regions, where motorists are encountering empty or closed gas stations and shortages of certain types of fuel, while another 12 regions introduced fueling limits this week. In response, the government has allowed some refineries to produce gasoline and diesel with lower environmental specifications to bolster domestic supply.
The squeeze has already reached Moscow, St. Petersburg and other regions, where some stations previously capped purchases at 20 liters per person. Reports from southern Russia said farmers were traveling to the Volga Federal District to buy diesel, while fires continued at an oil depot in Rybinsk and the Palkino oil pumping station in Yaroslavl Oblast.
