Russia Launches 70 Missiles and 611 Drones Against Ukraine, Killing 11 and Damaging Kyiv’s Pechersk Lavra
Russia launched 70 missiles and 611 drones against Ukraine overnight, killing 11 people nationwide and injuring 35 in Kyiv, President Volodymyr Zelensky said. The barrage, described as the heaviest Russian air attack on the capital in two weeks, set the UNESCO-listed Kyiv Pechersk Lavra monastery on fire, while a separate strike in Kharkiv killed multiple emergency responders and injured several others, according to Ukraine's interior minister.
Ukraine's military said air defenses shot down 50 missiles and 582 drones, but the attack still hit 42 locations across nearly every Kyiv district and briefly cut power to about 140,000 households. Zelensky said two Russian drones deliberately targeted the area around the Lavra and the Mystetskyi Arsenal, and other cultural damage included the Dovzhenko Film Studio's costume archive; Moscow denied responsibility for the monastery damage and said a Ukrainian Patriot interceptor struck the site.
