Warsh Drops Fed Forward Guidance, Launches 5 Task Forces as Fed Lifts 2026 Rate Forecast to 3.8%
At his first post-meeting press conference, Federal Reserve Chair Kevin Warsh said the central bank has dropped forward guidance and will issue shorter, fact-based policy statements, while launching five task forces to review Fed communications, the balance sheet, data sources, productivity and jobs, and inflation frameworks. The shift followed the Fed's decision to hold its benchmark rate at 3.5% to 3.75% in a unanimous 12-0 vote and lift the median projected fed funds rate for 2026 to 3.8% from 3.4%, with nine of 18 policymakers penciling in at least one hike.
Warsh said the reviews should make recommendations by the end of 2026 and would not revisit the Fed's 2% inflation target. He also did not submit his own rate projection, consistent with his criticism of forward guidance. Updated forecasts showed 2026 GDP growth slowing to 2.2% and inflation staying higher for longer, with PCE not returning to the 2% goal until 2028, while short-term interest-rate futures moved to price a bigger chance of a hike than a hold by September.
