Google Orders Intel to Package More Than 3 Million TPUs for 2028 as Nvidia Tests 18A
Alphabet's Google has ordered Intel to package more than 3 million of its tensor processing units, or TPUs, for 2028, while Nvidia is testing Intel's EMIB advanced packaging and 18A process for a future Feynman-series processor, The Information reported. Google and Nvidia are considering Intel as a backup production partner as tight capacity at Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. pushes major AI-chip designers to seek second sources, the report said.
The Information said Google is expected to produce more than 6 million TPUs using Intel's packaging technology across 2027 and 2028. Later accounts of the arrangement described Intel's role as packaging rather than making the logic die, which remains with TSMC; Intel shares rose as much as 15% after the reports.
