GAO Finds Only 25% of U.S. F-35s Fully Mission Capable; $13.7 Billion More Needed by 2031

A new GAO report found only 44% of U.S. F-35 jets are mission capable and just 25% are fully mission capable, meaning roughly three out of four are limited or grounded at any given time.

The report said the fleet has more than doubled from about 450 aircraft to more than 800 since 2021, overwhelming a sustainment system already dealing with software delays, spare-parts shortages and corrosion. Fixing those problems will require an additional $13.7 billion through 2031, it said, and readiness may worsen before it improves.
