US Export Controls Force Anthropic to Suspend Fable 5, Mythos 5 as EU Reviews Fallout
Anthropic suspended Fable 5 and Mythos 5 after the US government directed the company to limit foreign-national access to the models on national-security grounds. Politico reported that Amazon CEO Andy Jassy was among tech leaders who warned the White House that Fable’s guardrails could be bypassed, leading to three calls with Chief Executive Officer Dario Amodei before export controls were imposed. The White House has described the curbs as a last resort after hours of pressing Anthropic to pull the models, while Anthropic says it got a 90-minute deadline and no details on the threat.
Reuters reported that the European Commission is examining the practical consequences of the move, extending the dispute beyond Washington and Silicon Valley. The episode has also prompted calls, including from Representative Ro Khanna, for an independent AI-safety agency, while critics argue the US is making decisions on frontier AI without clear rules or public transparency.
