South Korean ETF Assets Hit Record $339 Billion as Kospi 200 Bearish Bets Reach 5-Year High
South Korean equity positioning is becoming more stretched, with the market value of ETFs listed on the Korea Exchange climbing to a record 514.4 trillion won ($339 billion), up more than 70% this year, while margin debt on the Kospi has risen to 27.8 trillion won ($18.3 billion). Leveraged funds tied to Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix have driven much of the expansion, and the Kospi 200 put-to-call open-interest ratio has climbed to about 2.5 times, the highest level in five years.
The buildup follows a week of sharp reversals in Seoul, including a more than 8% Kospi rally on June 12 led by chip shares that added about 620.5 trillion won in market value. With Samsung and SK Hynix making up 47% of the benchmark, a reversal in either stock could spill across the broader market as leveraged positions are unwound.
