Trump Threatens Bigger Iran Strikes, Says US Will Take Kharg Island, Hub for 90% of Crude Exports
President Donald Trump said the US would launch bigger, more powerful strikes on Iran later on Thursday and threatened to take Kharg Island, which handles about 90% of Iran’s crude exports, as part of a broader plan to assume control of the country’s oil and gas infrastructure and markets. In later remarks, Trump said taking Kharg had long been his preference, though he added that he was not sure Americans had the appetite for it and said Washington was still talking with Tehran about a deal.
The threat marks a sharp escalation after the US and Iran traded attacks overnight. The US military said it struck nearly 20 Iranian targets near the Strait of Hormuz, including air defenses, radar sites and ground control stations, after the downing of a US Army Apache helicopter; Iran responded with missiles and drones aimed at bases in Bahrain, Kuwait and Jordan, and Jordan said it intercepted five missiles with no casualties or damage. US military officials had done significant planning this spring to seize Kharg, but taking and holding the island carried a significant risk of American fatalities, while CNN reported Iran had spent months reinforcing it with additional troops, air defenses, MANPADS and mines.
