US Inflation Hits 4.2% in May, Highest in 3 Years; Core CPI Below Forecast at 0.2%
US consumer prices rose 0.5% in May from a month earlier and 4.2% from a year earlier, matching forecasts and pushing annual inflation to its highest level in three years. Core CPI, which excludes food and energy, increased 0.2% on the month, below the 0.3% estimate, while the annual core rate edged up to 2.9%.
Higher gas and other energy prices accounted for about 60% of the monthly increase, with gasoline up 40.5% from a year earlier, fuel oil up 58.9% and electricity up 5.9%. Short-term interest-rate futures rose after the report as traders pared Fed rate-hike bets, reflecting the softer monthly core reading even as headline inflation remained elevated.
