Trump Says He ‘Loves the Inflation’ After US CPI Hits 4.2%, 3-Year High
President Donald Trump said he was not concerned about the latest inflation report and added, "I love it. I love the inflation," after data showed the US consumer price index rose 4.2% in May from a year earlier, the fastest pace in three years. Prices increased 0.5% from April, in line with expectations.
Trump argued the increase, driven largely by energy costs linked to the Iran conflict, would ease once the war ends and oil flows resume normally. Gas and other energy prices accounted for about 60% of the monthly increase, while core inflation excluding food and energy was 2.9% from a year earlier; the 4.2% headline rate also exceeded 3.4% wage growth in May.
