US Naval Blockade Cuts Iran Oil Exports by More Than 90% in May
Iran's oil exports fell more than 90% in May, according to UANI, as U.S. maritime enforcement of a naval blockade severely disrupted Tehran's sanctions-busting network of ghost fleet tankers. A European Union Sentinel-1 satellite image showed a very large crude carrier moored on Tuesday at a jetty west of Kharg Island, the first similarly sized ship seen at Iran's main crude-export facility since May 6.
The slump adds to signs that flows through the Strait of Hormuz remain heavily constrained. Bloomberg reported that about 80 million barrels of Iranian oil and petrochemicals were stranded behind the U.S. blockade last month, while EA Maritime Analytics data showed fewer than 50 laden non-Iranian tankers crossed Hormuz in May, less than one-tenth of pre-conflict flows of 20 million barrels a day.
