Trump Order Asks AI Developers to Submit Frontier Models for Cyber Tests Up to 30 Days Before Release
President Donald Trump signed an executive order asking leading AI developers to voluntarily submit their most capable models for US government cybersecurity testing before broader release. The framework would give agencies access to so-called covered frontier models for up to 30 days to assess advanced cyber capabilities and help prepare defenses before the systems reach other trusted partners or the public.
The order also creates an AI cybersecurity clearinghouse to coordinate vulnerability discovery and remediation with industry and critical-infrastructure operators. It is narrower than a draft the White House shelved earlier, cutting the review window to 30 days from 90; which models are covered will be determined through a classified benchmark focused on advanced cyber capabilities, and the order says it does not authorize mandatory licensing, preclearance or permits for new AI models. The clearinghouse structure has already drawn questions from lawmakers over why Treasury, rather than CISA, is leading it.
