U.S. Boards Sanctioned Tanker MT Davina as CENTCOM Denies Iran Claim It Fired Warning Shots at Warships
U.S. forces carried out a maritime interdiction and right-of-visit boarding of the sanctioned stateless oil tanker MT Davina in the Indian Ocean overnight, Indo-Pacific Command said. The vessel, also known as Lenore, was sanctioned by Washington in October 2024 for Iranian oil trading, Reuters reported, and tanker-tracking data indicated it was carrying about 1.9 million barrels of Iranian crude.
Iran’s navy later said it fired warning missiles and drones at U.S. warships in the Gulf of Oman, accusing the U.S. Navy of harassing maritime traffic and seizing commercial vessels and oil tankers. U.S. Central Command called that account false, said Iranian forces did not attack or fire at American warships, and said U.S. forces continued to operate freely while enforcing what it described as an ongoing blockade against Iran. The episode extends a maritime standoff near the Strait of Hormuz and follows earlier disputed Iranian claims of attacks on U.S. assets in Kuwait, Bahrain and the Gulf of Oman that CENTCOM also rejected.
