Senate Republicans Advance Immigration Funding Bill After Trump Drops $1.8 Billion Anti-Weaponization Fund
Senate Republicans on Wednesday advanced a reconciliation bill to fund the Department of Homeland Security and immigration-enforcement agencies, with all 53 GOP senators voting along party lines to begin floor consideration. The step moves the package closer to passage after President Donald Trump’s $1.8 billion Anti-Weaponization Fund was removed from the measure.
The fund, proposed to compensate alleged victims of prosecutorial conduct under Trump’s predecessor, had drawn opposition from congressional Republicans and was temporarily paused by a federal judge in Virginia. Speaker Mike Johnson and Senate Majority Leader John Thune said Tuesday it was off the table for the current bill, and Thune said removing it should help the immigration funding package pass.
