New York Fed's Williams Sees No Need to Change Rates, Expects Inflation to Peak in Coming Months
Federal Reserve Bank of New York President John Williams said monetary policy is well positioned and there is no need to raise or lower interest rates for now. He said inflation has increased significantly, with higher energy prices driving up costs, and that inflation is likely to peak in the coming months.
Williams said he does not expect a long-running increase in energy prices and is not currently worried about persistent inflation. He described policy as modestly restrictive, said there is no obvious direction for the future path of rates, and has characterized the economy as growing around 2% with the labor market stable.
