China AI Startup DeepSeek to Raise $7.4 Billion in First Funding Round at Up to $59 Billion Valuation
Chinese AI startup DeepSeek is set to raise about 50 billion yuan ($7.4 billion) in its first external funding round, according to people with knowledge of the matter, in a deal that would value the company at $52 billion to $59 billion. About $4.4 billion is expected to come from outside investors including Tencent, CATL, the Chinese government's Big Fund, NetEase and JD, while CEO Liang Wenfeng would contribute $3 billion personally.
The financing would rank among China's largest startup fundraisings and would mark DeepSeek's first time taking outside capital. The company has told investors it intends to prioritize foundational and AGI research over short-term commercialization, and Liang currently owns 89.5% of the company.
