Travel Groups Warn Closing Newark to International Travel Could Cost $8 Billion Annually
U.S. airlines and tourism groups warned that closing Newark airport to international travel would cost about $8 billion annually and cause widespread economic damage if the Trump administration follows through on threats to disrupt operations at one of the nation’s busiest airports.
The warning follows comments by Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin that DHS is drawing up plans to stop processing international travelers at Newark and potentially other sanctuary-city airports. Mullin tied the idea to protests at ICE’s Delaney Hall detention facility in Newark and said Customs and Border Protection officers could be reassigned to protect federal employees, a move industry groups say would also disrupt cargo flows and tourism.
