Russia Recalls Ambassador to Armenia for Consultations Over Yerevan’s EU Ties
Russia recalled its ambassador to Armenia for consultations in Moscow, with the Foreign Ministry citing Yerevan’s steps toward closer ties with the European Union and concerns over cooperation within the Eurasian Economic Union. The move came a day after President Vladimir Putin warned Armenia against pivoting to Brussels.
The diplomatic step followed a joint statement by Russia, Belarus, Kazakhstan and Kyrgyzstan supporting a referendum in Armenia on whether to join the EU or remain in the EAEU. Members of the Eurasian Intergovernmental Council are due to report in December on the possible consequences for Armenia if the EAEU treaty were suspended, and Putin said higher energy prices could reduce Armenia’s GDP by at least 14%.
