North Korea Says West Coast Launches Were Tests of AI-Guided Cruise Missiles, Artillery Rockets
North Korea said the launches reported by South Korea off its west coast a day earlier were tests of newly developed missile and artillery systems overseen by Kim Jong Un, including a lightweight multi-purpose cruise missile that it said uses AI-guided precision targeting and terrain-matching navigation, as well as tactical cruise-missile and rocket systems, according to state media KCNA. South Korea's Joint Chiefs of Staff had said the North fired several projectiles, including at least one short-range ballistic missile, with one traveling about 80 kilometers out to sea.
KCNA said the tests also involved upgraded ballistic and cruise missiles, artillery rockets and a newly developed missile-launching system, and quoted Kim as saying the new launch platforms are suited for contemporary warfare. The account adds Pyongyang's explanation to what South Korea initially described as an unidentified projectile, in North Korea's first reported missile test since April 19 and the latest sign it is advancing both its conventional and nuclear strike capabilities amid tensions with the US, South Korea and Japan.
