Trump Rules Out Iran Sanctions Relief for Giving Up Highly Enriched Uranium
President Donald Trump said Iran would not get sanctions relief in exchange for giving up highly enriched uranium and that there was no discussion of financial relief before Tehran fulfills its commitments. He also said he would not be comfortable with Russia or China taking shipment of the stockpile and suggested he may not sign an agreement if Gulf countries do not join the Abraham Accords.
Iranian officials signaled the gap remains wide. Ali Bagheri Kani, deputy secretary of Iran's Supreme National Security Council, said the issue of roughly 900 pounds of highly enriched uranium that international monitors believe remains buried under a damaged nuclear site is not on the agenda of the talks. Later, the head of Iran's parliamentary national security committee said Tehran would not retreat from red lines including the right to enrich and possess uranium, authority over the Strait of Hormuz and full sanctions relief.
