WTI Settles at $88.68, Down 5.6%, as Draft US-Iran Framework Outlines Return of Commercial Shipping Through Hormuz
Oil prices fell sharply, with US crude futures settling 5.55% lower at $88.68 a barrel and Brent crude down 5.31% at $94.29, after Iranian state television said Tehran had obtained an initial, unofficial framework for a memorandum of understanding with the US. Under the outline, Washington would withdraw military forces from Iran's vicinity and lift a naval blockade, while Iran would restore commercial shipping through the Strait of Hormuz to pre-war levels within one month.
Iranian state media said military vessels were excluded, ship traffic would be managed with Oman, and a final deal reached within 60 days could be turned into a binding UN Security Council resolution. But Tehran also said the framework was not finalized and no steps would be taken without "tangible verification," and mixed signals from the talks, including earlier reports of differences over nuclear language and sanctions relief, helped keep the S&P 500 little changed despite the drop in oil.
