White House Calls Iran State TV Draft 'Complete Fabrication'; Trump Says No Deal Yet, No Sanctions Relief
The White House said an Iranian state television report describing a draft memorandum of understanding with the US was not true and a complete fabrication. Iranian state TV had said Tehran obtained an initial, unofficial framework under which Iran would restore commercial shipping through the Strait of Hormuz to pre-war levels within a month, while the US would withdraw forces from Iran’s vicinity and lift a naval blockade; the reported framework excluded military vessels and said Tehran would take no steps without tangible verification.
US officials nevertheless said talks were continuing. The White House said negotiations were proceeding nicely, but President Donald Trump said Tehran wanted a deal, no agreement had been reached and Washington was not satisfied with the current terms. Trump told PBS News that Iran would not receive sanctions relief in exchange for giving up highly enriched uranium, while Secretary of State Marco Rubio said diplomacy remained the preferred route provided Iran never obtains a nuclear weapon and the defense secretary said the US was prepared to use force again if talks failed.
