WHO Raises Eastern DR Congo Ebola Risk to Very High as Cases Top 900

sciencehealthworldafrica 66 posts · 30 accounts

The World Health Organization has raised the Ebola risk in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo to very high as the Bundibugyo-strain outbreak spreads beyond Ituri province into other parts of the country and neighboring Uganda. WHO chief Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said more than 900 suspected cases, including 101 confirmed, have been identified in Congo.

Locally transmitted cases have been confirmed in Uganda, prompting authorities to intensify screening at airports and border points. The strain has a 30% to 50% fatality rate and no approved vaccine, while health workers are also contending with aid cuts as they try to contain the outbreak.
