Oil Rises, Dollar Near 6-Week Highs as US-Iran Breakthrough Doubts Persist
Oil rose in U.S. trading and later swung in Asia, while the dollar hovered near six-week highs, after reports that U.S.-Iran talks still had not produced a final deal fed doubts about a near-term breakthrough and kept focus on tensions over the Strait of Hormuz. Asian stocks rose Friday, with U.S. stock futures up 0.2% and European futures gaining 0.8%.
The market reaction followed conflicting signals on the diplomacy. Earlier reports had pointed to a Pakistan-mediated draft accord that would include an immediate ceasefire, freedom of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz and gradual sanctions relief, but a senior Iranian source later said no deal had been reached even though gaps had narrowed. The source said uranium enrichment and Tehran's control over the strait remained sticking points, while President Donald Trump said negotiations were continuing, Iran would not be allowed to keep its highly enriched uranium, and Hormuz should remain open and free of tolls.
