Oil Touches 2-Week High After UAE Nuclear Plant Strike, US-Iran Talks Stall
Oil touched a two-week high, Asian equities opened weaker and Treasury yields rose after the drone strike near the UAE’s Barakah nuclear power plant and as deadlocked US-Iran peace talks fanned fears of extended supply disruption. Trump said the “clock is ticking” for Iran, adding to pressure on the negotiations and concern over flows through the Strait of Hormuz.
The UAE said three drones entered from the western border on Sunday, with two intercepted and a third hitting an electrical generator outside the inner perimeter of the Barakah plant in Al Dhafra. Authorities said no injuries were reported and there was no impact on radiological safety, while the International Atomic Energy Agency said radiation levels remained normal and the source of the attack was under investigation. Later Sunday, Saudi Arabia said it intercepted three drones that entered its airspace from Iraq. Separately, Iran’s parliament national security head said Tehran had prepared a mechanism to manage Hormuz Strait traffic along a designated route, and that only commercial vessels and parties cooperating with Iran would benefit, with fees collected for services.
