Iran’s Kharg Island Crude-Export Berths Go 10 Days Without Tanker Loadings
Iran’s main oil-export facility at Kharg Island in the Persian Gulf has gone at least 10 days without visible loadings of large ocean-going tankers at its crude-export berths, according to Sentinel satellite images taken on seven days since May 8, including the latest on Saturday. The stretch underscores the growing strain on Tehran from a US naval blockade.
Satellite images taken on May 16 showed 23 tankers around Kharg, the largest cluster since the US Navy began the blockade about a month ago, compared with four on April 13. The vessels were in anchorages around the island or berthed at crude- or liquefied petroleum gas-loading jetties, a buildup that Charlie Brown, an adviser to United Against Nuclear Iran, said suggested growing delays and bottlenecks across Iran’s oil export system.
