China Adds Nvidia’s RTX 5090D V2 Gaming Chip to Customs Banned List During Huang Visit
China last week added Nvidia’s China-specific RTX 5090D V2 gaming chip to a customs banned list during Chief Executive Officer Jensen Huang’s visit to Beijing with President Donald Trump, according to the Financial Times. The Blackwell-based chip was designed to comply with US export controls, but had also been used by gamers, animators and AI developers for smaller model training and inference.
The move highlights Beijing’s push to curb reliance on downgraded Nvidia products and support domestic chipmakers such as Huawei and Cambricon, the report said. The customs list initially also included Nvidia’s H200 and H20 AI chips, and H200 shipments remain blocked by Chinese customs despite US approval for sales to companies including Alibaba and Tencent.
