Senators Probe DOJ’s $1.776 Billion Anti-Weaponization Fund in Trump IRS Settlement
The Justice Department’s $1.776 billion Anti-Weaponization Fund, created as part of the settlement of President Donald Trump’s $10 billion lawsuit against the Internal Revenue Service over leaked tax returns, is facing scrutiny as senators open probes and critics question who can qualify for compensation, how challenges to the program would work and how payouts will be overseen.
Critics have raised the prospect that the fund could benefit Trump supporters, including people involved in Jan. 6 cases. The department has said the program will offer a voluntary, nonpartisan claims process for people who say they were targeted by government weaponization, while Trump and the other plaintiffs in the IRS case will receive a formal apology but no monetary payment or damages; any unused money will revert to the federal government.
