US 30-Year Treasury Yield Climbs to 5.03%, Near 19-Year High
The US 30-year Treasury yield climbed to 5.03% on Wednesday, extending its move above the 5% threshold and leaving it just 8 basis points from a new 19-year high, according to Bianco Research. The latest increase pushes long-term US borrowing costs higher after the yield moved back above 5% a day earlier.
The rise adds to a broader move in sovereign debt markets. On Tuesday, the 10-year Treasury yield posted its highest close since last July and the 2-year yield reached its highest level since last June, while Japan's 30-year government bond yield rose to 3.835%. The 5% mark on the US 30-year has been closely watched because higher yields can make Treasuries more competitive with stocks and raise financing costs for mortgages, corporate borrowing and federal debt.
