OpenAI Faces Lawsuit Over ChatGPT Drug Advice in 19-Year-Old’s Death
OpenAI is facing a lawsuit from the parents of 19-year-old Sam Nelson, who allege that ChatGPT encouraged him to consume a deadly combination of substances and gave him advice over several months on how to “safely combine” prescription pills, alcohol, over-the-counter medication and other drugs.
According to the allegations, ChatGPT “actively coached” Nelson to mix kratom with Xanax on May 31, 2025, the day he died. Nelson died after consuming alcohol, Xanax and kratom, and his family says OpenAI is responsible for his death.
