US 30-Year Treasury Yield Returns to 5.12% as Investors Warn of Equity Risks
Long-dated U.S. Treasury yields climbed back above 5% on May 17, with the 30-year yield at 5.12%, as war-driven inflation fears intensified and investors warned that the bond-market surge could pose a risk to an equities market that is not prepared for higher rates. The renewed move pushed borrowing costs back toward a two-decade high above 5%, reinforcing concern that a period of elevated financing costs may be taking hold.
The advance revives the selloff seen on May 15, when the 30-year yield rose above 5.1% and a $25 billion auction of 30-year Treasuries cleared at 5.046%, the first such sale above 5% since 2007. That earlier rout also drove the 10-year yield to 4.59%, underscoring the risk that higher long-dated yields spill over into stocks and broader financing conditions.
