U.S. Officials Suspect Iranian Hackers Breached Gas-Station Fuel-Monitoring Systems in Multiple States
U.S. officials suspect Iranian hackers breached automatic tank gauges, or fuel-monitoring systems used to track fuel levels in storage tanks, at gas stations in multiple states. Officials said there was no indication of physical damage from the intrusions.
The intruders exploited systems with no passwords and were able to fake displayed readings, but couldn't alter the actual fuel levels in tanks. Officials said the access nevertheless raised safety concerns because it could, in theory, allow a gas leak to go undetected.
