US 30-Year Treasury Yield Hits 5.12%, Highest Since 2008, Pressuring AI Stock Rally

businessmacroeconomicsstocksaiai-sector-impact 19 posts · 13 accounts

The U.S. 30-year Treasury yield rose to 5.12% on May 16, extending the selloff in long-dated government debt and leaving the rate at its highest level since the run-up to the 2008 financial crisis. The latest increase is putting renewed pressure on the AI stock rally, as a 30-year yield sustained above 5% raises the cost of capital for AI capital expenditure and private-credit financing.

The move builds on a May 15 jump that took the 30-year yield above 5.1% and on a $25 billion auction of 30-year Treasuries that cleared at 5.046%, the first such sale above 5% since 2007. The rise is part of a broader global bond selloff: Britain’s 30-year gilt yield has reached its highest level since 1999, while earlier in the week the U.S. 10-year yield climbed to 4.59% after firmer producer-price data and a surge in Japanese long-bond yields.

The yield level everyone is watching: 30Y Treasury sustainably above 5%. It already trades there. Rising yields raise the cost of capital for AI capex and for private credit. Both are funding this rally indirectly. The transmission from
