Xi Warns Trump Taiwan Missteps Could Send US-China Ties Toward Conflict
Chinese President Xi Jinping warned Donald Trump during their Beijing summit that Taiwan is the most important issue in U.S.-China relations and that mishandling it could send ties down a dangerous path, sharpening an issue Beijing had already framed before the trip as a red line. The exchange came as Trump praised the two countries’ “fantastic relationship” and Xi said trade talks were making progress at the opening of a two-day summit during Trump’s first visit to China by a sitting U.S. president in nearly a decade.
China said the two sides agreed to pursue a “constructive, strategically stable” relationship centered on cooperation and measured competition, while also urging Washington to exercise “utmost caution” on Taiwan. The White House later described the meeting as “good” but issued a readout that did not mention Taiwan, while Taiwan’s foreign ministry said China is the “sole risk” to regional peace and stability.
