OPEC Report Shows Saudi April Crude Output at 6.3 Million BPD
Saudi Arabia told OPEC that its crude output fell by another 651,000 barrels a day in April to 6.316 million barrels a day, according to the group's monthly report, putting a precise figure on an earlier disclosure that production had dropped to the lowest level since 1990. The decline leaves Saudi output down 42% since February amid the Iran war and disruption to exports from the Persian Gulf.
The latest Saudi figures add to evidence of a severe regional supply shock. Saudi Aramco Chief Executive Officer Amin Nasser said the Strait of Hormuz disruption was the biggest energy supply shock the world has ever experienced and could remove about 100 million barrels of oil from the market for every week the waterway remains closed. The US Energy Information Administration assumes the strait stays shut through late May and has warned crude prices would be about $20 a barrel higher than its current forecast if the closure extends through late June.
