Trump Says Taiwan Should Stay 'As Is,' Urges Chipmakers to Move to US
President Donald Trump said Taiwan should remain 'the way it is' after his Beijing summit with Xi Jinping and urged semiconductor manufacturers on the island to shift production to the US. Trump added that he didn't think China would 'do anything' on Taiwan while he is in office, though it 'might' after he leaves, and said the US was not looking to back a push for independence.
The remarks extend Trump's earlier post-summit comments on a key flashpoint in US-China ties. He has said he made 'no commitment' to Xi on Taiwan, called on both China and Taiwan to 'cool down' and, when asked whether Taiwan should feel more or less secure after the meeting, replied 'Neutral.' Xi had warned in Beijing that Taiwan was the most important issue in the relationship and that mishandling it could push the two powers into conflict.
