Japan Receives First Central Asian Crude as Iran War Disrupts Gulf Oil Flows
Japan will receive its first Central Asian crude oil since the Iran war began, according to the government, in the latest sign that the conflict and continued disruption in the Strait of Hormuz are prompting Asian importers to adjust fuel sourcing. Before the war began in late February, Japan sourced about 95% of its crude imports from the Middle East.
The oil cargo adds to a broader regional shift already visible in gas and coal markets. Coal shipments have risen as countries seek alternatives to disrupted gas supplies, while Qatar’s Al Kharaitiyat recently completed what appeared to be the first Qatari LNG export through Hormuz since the war began, suggesting any recovery in flows through the waterway remains tentative.
