Latvian Defence Minister Resigns After Two Drones Hit Oil Storage Facilities
Latvian Defence Minister Andris Spruds resigned after two Ukrainian drones flew into Latvia from Russia and hit oil storage facilities, exposing weaknesses in the country’s response to the incident. Prime Minister Evika Siliņa said the handling was unsatisfactory and moved to replace him with Colonel Raivis Melnis.
The drones reportedly crashed into an empty fuel storage facility in Rēzekne after going undetected, and public alerts were issued roughly an hour late. Ukraine’s foreign minister said Russian electronic warfare had deliberately diverted the drones from targets in Russia, and Kyiv said it was ready to cooperate with Baltic countries and Finland to prevent similar incidents.
