Samsung Chip Workers Reject Bonus Offer and Deepen Threat to Profit
Samsung Electronics chip workers rejected a $340,000 one-time bonus and are demanding annual payouts like SK hynix's $900,000, escalating a labor dispute after the company's top management called for dialogue. The workers are seeking a greater share of AI-related gains, and the standoff heightens the risk of an 18-day strike.
JPMorgan estimated that if Samsung accepts the union's demands, higher labor costs could reduce 2026 operating profit by 7% to 12% from current estimates. The bank said an 18-day strike could lead to more than KRW 4 trillion ($2.76 billion) in opportunity loss and cut annual output by about 0.9% for DRAM, 0.5% for NAND and 2.4% for foundry if wafer starts fall or production lines are shut down.
