Trump Gives EU Until July 4 to Ratify Trade Deal or Face Higher Tariffs
President Donald Trump said the European Union has until July 4 to ratify its trade agreement with the US, setting a new deadline after previously threatening to raise tariffs on auto imports as soon as this week if the bloc failed to move quickly. After a call with European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, Trump said the EU must fulfill the Turnberry trade deal and cut tariffs to zero or US tariffs would jump to much higher levels.
The deadline extends a standoff that has focused on auto tariffs and the implementation of the transatlantic pact. Earlier Thursday, EU trade negotiator Bernd Lange said the bloc was aiming to complete negotiations this month, while EU officials said they support the agreement but want safeguards in case the US changes tariff terms or fails to uphold its commitments.
